How can I cover a latex-painted surface to make it not scratch as easily?

I made a desk and painted it with latex paint (I wanted it to be really shiny). Now it has been dry for over two months and is still easily getting scratched (fingernails, etc). Basically the paint is too soft. What can I paint it with that will harden it up to desk-quality?How can I cover a latex-painted surface to make it not scratch as easily?
Repainting it with a polyurethane floor enamel would be ideal. Polyurethane oil basedd) floor paints dry to a hard finish. First prep the area by lightly scuff sanding with 150 or 220 grit sandpaper. Clean off the surface with a rag and paint thinner. When dry- apply 1-2 coats of the paint. How can I cover a latex-painted surface to make it not scratch as easily?
As far as paint goes an oil-based enamel will be harder than a latex based paint.

Two hours is not long enough for the paint to reach its ultimate hardness, though. Wait a little longer (like two days) to see if it ultimately reaches a hardness you can live with.

If you are not too picky about the color you could use an epoxy paint. It is available in spray cans in a few colors or in a two part kit that is normally meant for bathtubs in white and ivory or bisque. That is a good, hard paint. It is a bit expensive, though. It is also a little bit of a hassle to apply. Don't get it on anything you don't want painted because it does not clean up well.

If you painted a specific color that you really want to keep, then consider buying a piece of tempered glass cut to fit the desk top. Make sure you get the edges polished.
You can paint over it with enamel paint which is much harder, or coat what you have with clear polyurethane.
